Herbert Spencer described Serbs as inherently warlike after traveling Southern Europe.
Anyway, while reading the early portion of the book, which deals with WWI and Serbia;
The War happened because Austria was involved at the outset.
They perceived the Assassination as representing an 'existential' threat (that which could bring about the collapse of their Empire), hence their resorting to extreme measures.
And because it was A-H, not Ottoman Turk, the whole Europe got involved. I don't think the whole Europe would've fought over Ottoman Turk.
Which again, leads to my assumption that this historical war was not imperial, but Nationalist in origin.
Sure the war was fought all over the place for example Africa, but that was just the symptom, not the cause.
And how else would you fit A-H and Russia into the Imperialistic argument? Did they have colonies over the world like England, France and Germany? Nope.
Did Russia intervene over Imperial issues, colonies? Nope. The intervened over Serbia, in the name of Pan Slavism.
Just because that Imperialistic nations fought, labeling it as an Imperialistic war doesn't quite make sense. It was always, at its core, a Nationalistic outburst.
